Radio City Christmas Spectacular Starring The Rockettes

Radio City Christmas Spectacular Starring The Rockettes

I'm sure the show is better than portrayed here. However based on the DVD alone I'd save your money!!

The Original Christmas Classics (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town/Frosty the Snowman/Frosty Returns/Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol/Little Drummer Boy/Cricket on the Hearth)

I absolutely LOVE this collection! My husband bought this set for me last Christmas and I have to tell you, it was my favorite gift and I hope I don't wear it out before our children are old enough to watch it! Even though I am a child of the 80's, this version of Rudolph and Frosty were always my favorite! Great songs, great stories...just plain good clean fun. Makes me want to curl up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate, covered in a blanket and start watching it now. I think I just might do that!

Daryl Hall & John Oates- Live at the Troubadour

Daryl Hall & John Oates- Live at the Troubadour

I just picked this up used at my local record store (yes, we have a couple where I live...envy me!) and I'm not sure why I did but boy am I glad!

Its a very "unplugged" sort of treatment..which I favor over electronica anyway...and the songs really are not hidden behind too much production but the band is very very good.

nearly 20 songs are played 2 hours (much better than all the 1 hour half shows on DVD these days) and Halls voice is still very very good..blue eyed soul. The bonus interviews are also a nice touch..

If you are a fan this should be a "buy it now"...if your not, I'm not sure why you are reading but this would be a good DVD to start with and you will find you know more of these songs than you thought you did! I believe Hall and Oates officially passed Simon & Garfunkel as the most popular duo of all time many many years ago...and all I mention that for is to note they did have a serious string of hits!

Home Alone

Home Alone

If ppl actually dont like this movie. I just have to ask one question. What crawled up your butt? of course this movie is predictable and its much better when your a kid, but this movie like for most is a nostalgia movie. So for all you ppl who could see through the predictable crap and thought they were so smart for understanding that they were watching a movie full of holes...good for you!, but for most I didnt give a crap about the holes, its about having a laugh. So get over yourself and have a freakin laugh, its a christmas movie...Darn scrooges...

Centennial: The Complete Series

I loved the book and the series follows it very closely. Would recomend it to anyone who read the book and history.

The Who At Kilburn: 1977

The Who At Kilburn: 1977

A very interesting release---the 1977 Kilburn show that supposedly wasn't good enough to be used in the Kids Are Alright---now gets released in full. Was it good enough? Well, it was filmed so Jeff Stein would have some performances of Who's Next era songs non-existant on film: Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Foolded Again. The Kids Are Alright versions---filmed at Shepperton--of those two songs are a little better, especially WGFA. So Jeff made the right decision then to forget the Kilburn show. 30 years later, Who cares? Let's see everything that's still in the vault.

The fascination of this particular show is it's Keith's last proper concert appearance. Sadly, Keith is a shadow of his former self. He's only about 30 when this was filmed but looks 10 years older than he did on the 1975 tour--the last great Who performances.

The Kilburn show was the band's only performance of 1977 and it shows. They are all rusty. But a few times: Shakin' All Over, My Wife, Pinball Wizard, the old magic resurfaces. Townsend is clearly not happy, which results in a passionate performance. Daltrey forgets some lyrics but is generally in good form. The Ox is his normal, solid self. Always the best bass player on the planet.

The show is very well filmed. The sound is not as good as the film quality: Townsend is recorded well but Entwistle's bass is frustratingly low in the mix. It's hard to tell how Moon is recorded: he was not playing up to his normal standards and sometimes he's trying to hit all his drums at once, and not really hitting any of them at all. Other times he can still pull off a great fill or roll.

The London Coliseum show from 1969 is a quality addition and makes this package a great value. It's only stage lit--not lit for filming proper--but it's the Who at their performance peak. The sound is a bit muddy but still, any peak Who is a joy.

If you love the Who, you have to have this package. All Moon era film is a treasure. If you are a novice Who fan, this is not the first Who DVD to buy. The Kids Are Alright is the place to start.

Looney Tunes - Golden Collection, Volume One

Looney Tunes - Golden Collection, Volume One

A few years back when I first got this set, I remember revelling once again in what network television had taken away from me. I was thrilled to own some of my favorite Looney Tunes cartoons.

I did notice, however, the disproportionate number of Chuck Jones cartoons, with just a few Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett, and Bob McKimson shorts in the mix. Unless subtitled "The Best of Chuck Jones," it really should have featured several shorts from each major director (including Tex Avery and Frank Tashlin).

But now I see that what this set lacks for in variety of style, it makes up in variety of characters. This was the mold that shouldn't have been broken. Disc 1 is dedicated to Bugs Bunny, disc 2 features Daffy and Porky, and discs 3 and 4 present a nice mix of all the major characters, plus a few minor ones. The only mistake was adding several more Bugs cartoons to discs 3 and 4. This may account for the disappearing rabbit effect on the later volumes.

These cartoons may not encompass the cream of the crop, but I do know that there are more laughs per short in this set than in any subsequent volume. So the bottomline is this: if you only want to purchase one Looney Tunes Golden Collection, this is the one to get. (But do yourself a favor and invest some cash in volume two, also!)

Hellboy (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]

Hellboy (Director's Cut) [Blu-ray]

This has a lot of oddball parts to it, but overall it's very good fun and a good way of spending a quiet evening in. There's some great lines and a lot of very entertaining visuals, with some good action too. Great!
